Herzog Drei, dedicated to the lineage of Herzog Zwei

In-game Screenshot A mammoth derelict in cold space, the Wächter floated quietly for many decades. The crippled capital ship drifted among comets and rogue asteroids, far from the clutches of The Republic. None knew that in its gnarled, metallic bowels rested a mighty weapon. Not even the Tyrant himself, who maliciously ruled the people of Arier. But for every oppressor, there is a rebel. Lukas was an exiled salvager. His dissent towards the ruling Tyrant brought swift retribution from the Republic, and he was forced to flee Arier...a fate which armed him with the discovery of the Wächter and its precious cargo: the Superfighter.

Many credit Herzog Zwei with founding the concepts in modern Real-Time Strategy games. The premise of the game is surprisingly similar the earlier Rescue Raiders, a one-dimensional side-scroller in which you pilot helicopter to assault an enemy base and purchase different types of units to head the ground assult. Herzog Zwei, in switching to a two-dimenaional map, added concepts of unit control which are considered the baseline for modern RTS. However, it's arguable that Herzog Zwei's more autonomous units, and slower method of changing their AI programs, produced a more strategic game when compared with modern RTS games which are more tactical.
